As the world changes, especially for women, couples are waiting until later in life than perhaps ever before to start a family. While this often adds up to a more stable environment for a child to be born into, it can become far more difficult to conceive after the age of 30. To help increase their odds of becoming pregnant many of these women turn to an ovulation predictor kit for help.

An ovulation predictor kit works by monitoring the level of luteinizing hormone, or LH, in a woman’s body. Just before ovulation the female body experiences a surge in the levels of LH, which an ovulation predictor kit is designed to detect.

A positive result using an ovulation predictor kit indicates that a woman is about to ovulate and that for most women means that they will be at their most fertile for the next 3 days or so, with peak fertility at about 36 hours after the positive result was obtained.

The LH surge is quite a dramatic one, but it is also very brief. In order to detect it properly women will need to test on a regular basis and at certain times of the day.

An ovulation predictor kit looks and works very much like a home pregnancy test. In the case of most brands there are two bands, a test band and a control band. Women of all ages can experience difficulties when trying to conceive, but many often have far better results monitoring their fertility with ovulation predictor kits than they do by daily temperature charting, as the test anticipates ovulation rather than simply confirm it has already occurred, which what fluctuations in temperature can be used to track.
